About the Author
LARRY BURKETT (1939-2003) was a well-known authority on business and personal finance. He wrote more than seventy books, including non-fiction bestsellers like Family Financial Workbook, Debt-Free Living, and The World's Easiest Guide to Finances. He also had a worldwide radio ministry. Larry founded Christian Financial Concepts and served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Crown Financial Ministries®. He is survived by his wife, Judy, four grown children and nine grandchildren.

Advocating a perception-based mode of thinking free from rigid rationality, de Bono ( Six Thinking Hats ) hopes this manual will "signal the start of a New Renaissance." He argues that "our existing thinking culture" overemphasizes rote logic and simplistic labeling of behaviors as right/wrong or always/never. Deeply suspicious of language as a tool for argument or persuasion, he likens the brain to a "self-organizing system" that generates patterns, and he calls for a new "lateral thinking" to liberate the mind from the shackles of language-dependent thought. "Water logic," adaptive and imaginative, will replace our confrontational, repetitive "rock logic." This trendy how-to, which reads like a motivational seminar handbook, is full of catchy slogans and mixes byte-size nuggets with questionable assertions ("Humor is by far the most significant behavior of the human mind"). Three Nobel physicists have written forewords to this book, which includes techniques designed to jolt the mind out of familiar ruts.

Traditional ("rock logic") thinking is no longer sufficient to deal with today's political, economic, and social concerns, according to author and psychologist de Bono. While classical reasoning may sometimes serve us well, it fails in its assumption that perception is absolute. De Bono presents a model of the brain as a self-organizing system that forms and uses patterns. Behavior in this system is driven by perception that varies according to circumstance. De Bono urges the use of thinking techniques (e.g., provocation, lateral thinking) that encourage creativity and alternative designs. While the author occasionally belabors some points, his vision for a future that acknowledges the limitations of logic and emphasizes the importance of perception merits serious attention. A deceptively simple but consistently provocative appeal for perceptual (as opposed to structured) thinking from the author of Six Action Shoes (the trifle reviewed below), Tactics (1984), and several other works dealing with powers of the mind. As before, de Bono (an M.D. who no longer practices) challenges traditional Western thought processes on grounds that they are unequal to the task of solving the Global Village's many pressing problems. According to the author, orthodox methods of thinking are based on absolutes, a rigid insistence on facts, and other unproductive habits dating back to an ancient time when truth seekers like Aristotle relied on reason or its corollaries (analysis, logic, etc.) to free themselves from the bonds of dogma. While essentially adversarial methods are fine for achieving technological gains or winning arguments, de Bono says, such systems lack the originality and creativity required to deal with socioeconomic as well as political affairs. Describing the human brain as a self-organizing marvel, the author makes a strong case for what he calls ``water logic,'' a purportedly natural activity of the physical organ's neural network. By de Bono's account, water logic represents a fluid approach that provides the basis for new ideas, humor, insights, poetry, and other of civilization's more fruitful pleasures. On occasion, de Bono can be decidedly arbitrary in advancing his theories. Without much supporting evidence, for example, he dismisses language as a trap and characterizes humor as the intellect's most significant behavior (owning mainly to its asymmetry). In aid of breakthrough conjecture, however, the author is never less than thought-provoking, and his witty, allusive text is notable for its wealth of illuminating digressions. Learn How To Think, And Then Do It

If you're interested in learning what the brain does without having to memorize lists of neurotransmitters and sections of neo-cortex, this is the book for you. De Bono is a genius at making a complex subject completely accessible to the average reader. For example, he avoids involved anatomical terminology altogether by using the metaphor of an octopus in place of a neuron. Learning how the brain works by imagining a beach full of glowing, smelly octopuses is a more efficient mnemonic device than a dry, "scientific" treatment. The rest of the book addresses the problems we humans have in trying to deal with everything "logically" without real logical tools, and thinking that everything can be "solved" through language, analysis, and confrontation. My way of thinking was enriched by De Bono's introduction of paradox, humor, and intuition to provoke creative thinking. And he takes on more than a few of philosophy's sacred cows while he's at it. The idea of "catchment" as a model of our automatic compartmentalization of new data is alone worth the price of the book.

The Key To Understanding Human Behavior

I found this book to be extremely useful to my understanding of human behavior. I have been reading extensive psychological literature in order to formulate a useful model to understand how humans in organizations react to proposed change. I want to use that model to help them create positive change. Most of the literature on organizational change is anecdotal support of an approach that once worked somewhere. (Exception: Chris Argyris) DeBono starts with the fundamental mechanism of how the brain works to understand the behavior people exhibit. This understanding has enabled me to formulate much more effective approaches to individual and organizaitonal change. You do have to think hard to understand deBono's underlying messages. It may be difficult if this is the first deBono book you read, or if you have not been digging for a solution to a specific problem. But, I give it a 5+!

A concise explanation of a complex subject.

This book stands out as one of the best explanations of how the mind works, and doesn't work, and how to make make the best use of your own. He destroys in a few paragraphs a lot of deeply entrenched misconceptions that western society has been operating under for centuries. I've seen a lot of other long and wordy attempts that fail to get half as far as De Bono has in this little book. It's densely packed with concepts, each touched on just long enough to give the reader the main points, without all the flowery self-indulgent nonsense that so many other writers of books for the lay person love to fill their pages with. De Bono gets to the point. And good points they are! Excellent book.

You don't have to be from Chicago to appreciate this book andRoyko's genius as a writer and wry political observer.
His almostmatter-of-fact accounting of the machine corruption in Chicago under Daley is eye opening. Those who analogize it to the Mafia are on point, except its power the politicians are after, rather than just money. It's unbelievable to me that all of the venality was so out in the open and tolerated by the populace.
Particularly interesting was his account of the ethnic and racial evolution in this melting pot of a city. Italian, Polish, Irish, German, and Slavic neighborhoods whose only common theme was their hatred of the blacks. The paradox being that despite the white hatred, the segregation and appalling living conditons, those same white people could count on the black vote come election time, largely because of unscrupulous black ward bosses who cared more about power than helping their constituents.
One of the many things I like about Royko is that after reading his columns for years, I couldn't tell you whether his politics are liberal or conservative. He didn't deal in bromides, just reality. When something wasn't right, he called it on the perpetrators and wasn't hesitant to name names. I really miss the guy.

This book was heralded on one of my favorite podcasts as the best book about city politics and it did not disappoint. This book beautifully describes the well-oiled components of the Daley machine: the rank-and-file Democratic voters, the recipients of the patronage system, national political leaders, labor unions, the private sector, and most importantly, Boss Daley himself. It should be required reading for all Chicagoans.

Awesome story I can fall into!!!!!

I've come to realize that I prefer to read a romance that switches back and forth between the male and female point of view and this story just cements that. It's wonderful knowing what both people are thinking instead of being in the dark on half of it all. (another thing I love is I've also got a Mario ringtone on my phone and that was before I ever read this.) This story is so life like its almost scary. The arguing, the admitting you were wrong and making up for it is so true about real adult life and I can't get enough of how awesomely this is written. I loved everything about this book and I don't believe that there is anything that could be complained about.

Great characters and a fresh storyline

Jace and Ethan have instant chemistry. Both are reluctant to taint the waters of being roommates with an attempt at more. Jace struggles with trusting her instincts and overthinking. Together they must fight for their livelihoods and reputations. Great characters and a fresh storyline. Can't wait to see what else this series has to offer.

A great tale for geek girls who believe in love and hot, hot sex! Feminism and surrender! Woohoo! I just love Allyson’s writing. I can’t wait to read #2 and #3.

Empha­ sis was placed on the regulation and disorders of lipid metabolism. The latter included hyperlipidemias, atherosclerosis, and alcohol-induced liver damage. In this volume, I have chosen to focus on the disorders of lipid metabolism at a level appropriate both for medical students and for graduate and undergradu­ ate students majoring in the biological sciences. The biochemistry, nutrition, genetics, and cell biology aspects of lipids and lipid metabolism will be covered as they relate to lipid disorders. I am not aware of any textbook that integrates the disorders of lipid metabolism in this manner. Chapter 1 includes a brief discussion of the basic structures, properties, and metabolism of lipids. This chapter is not very detailed, since the material covered is available in basic textbooks on biochemistry. The major fpcus of this volume is the various lipid disorders, with emphasis on polyunsaturated fatty acids, the molecular biology and pathogenesis of the hyperlipidemias, dietary and drug therapy for the hyperlipidemias, and alcohol-induced liver damage. The material presented has been obtained from several textbooks on biochemistry and from a variety of recent articles in the scientific literature.

Incredibly insightful, very thorough book, worth every penny. This is more than just a textbook; it should have been called a reference book. You will find yourself looking back upon this innumerable times. A very technical work, it is not an "easy read" for someone outside this field, but certainly understandable to those professionals and students familiar with biological sciences.
