As his dying breath vaporizes in the freezing air, he grows cold. The warm vapour of his final exhalation travels upwards to dissipate in the atmosphere, but instead, coalesces and descends again to the cold blue lips of the man lying in the alley. He takes a breath and the tramp’s body warms as a new occupant moves in. Eric is awake.

About the Author
Dom Shaw began his media career at 21 by winning the Grierson Award for Best Documentary in 1982 for co-directing the seminal post-punk documentary ‘Rough Cut & Ready Dubbed’. After a few years directing music documentaries for the fledgling Channel 4, he started scriptwriting for television. In a varied career behind the camera, he has written for peak time series on the BBC and ITV networks in the UK. ‘Eric is Awake’ is his first novel.

Orwell Meets the 2000's in a Book that is Sure to Hit it Big

I'll be the first to admit that I'm a Dystopian junkie, and that it all started with a love for Orwell's 1984, and, subsequently, Animal Farm, so when I saw Eric is Awake by Dom Shaw on Goodreads, and saw Orwell's profile and piercing, sardonic gaze from the cover, I had to be part of the read and review for it, and I am so glad I took the chance with this literary Dystopian ficiton.
Firstly, the cover for this book is vibrant and appealing and captured my interest right away. I am happy to say that the content is even more appealing. The layout for the book is so compelling and well researched. The Orwellian journals, the articles with recipes for impoverished and creative foodies, the running narrative, and even the flashes of police reports might have made for a confusing read, if it wasn't so expertly plotted. As it is, I flew through the pages, with rarely a snag, and a growing sense of foreboding, curiosity, mystery and discomfort.
Indeed, Shaw understands how to craft discomfort with humor and human folly so well, that it is no surprise for me to find out that he has been (under a different name) a bestselling co-author. His language is precision, his story is moving, intriguing and hits uncomfortably close to home, even for a U.S. born reader (the author writes about U.K. related events, but ones that readers of many nations will have no trouble relating to).
This book is highly political in tone, but is, at the same time, aware of the limited views of radicals and conservatives, alike. The book plays upon the sometimes ridiculous ways in which revolutions can occur. It is a novel about human mishaps merged with power grabs merged with lust merged with technology. A novel about how these things bring about the best and worst in different people.
As Eric, the protagonist, struggles with his identity, and even his name (how will he be hailed when he doesn't know, for sure, himself), we readers struggle with our identities, the ways in which we create ourselves and spend our times in this modern age. In the space of this book, the human story does not seem so different from the story told generations ago by authors wondering about humanity, technology and politics.
This is a literary novel, yes. It is a smart, thinking person's novel, sure, but it is also wildly entertaining, much like the novels by Orwell himself. You cannot go wrong picking this book up, but be prepared to think, and be open to re-reading it several times, as I surely will be. This book could easily have been taught in one of my college classes, and since I'm a college teacher, it very well may be in the near future.

Eric is awake, but not very well at all

Is this the time to write of past progressive heroes of the twentieth century?.With the two main centrist Uk parties determined to stamp out memories of the working class movements fighting to achieve a fairer society and a more even distribution of resources;and the Daily Mail engaging in ferocious rubbishing of a key academic and father of the Labour leader from that pre Thatcher period,Ralph Miliband?Even Richard Hoggart's son is reduced in the Guardian to claiming that the seminal Uses of Literacy's purpose is to meet the needs of the writers of Coronation Street!!

The answer in relation to this blinding fear of, and demonisation of the truth, as Britain experiences ever widening social educational and economic gaps between the few rich and the majority who are much poorer, is a resounding yes.Dom Shaw has written an intriguing exploration of the concerns and involvements ot the real George Orwell with a character sprung from the homeless at the time of his death who may or may not be Eric Blair but who goes on to experience the depredations of life on the margins as well as the overweaning power of the Surveillance State today.Assange and Snowden had their forebears like Orwell and 1984 paving the ground for their truths about the individual's quality of life,civil rights and freedom of expression today.

But this is not a heavy book .Rather it carefully ruminates as it authentically travels from pub to rubbish tip in Norh London[innit!?].Its observations are amusing, insightful and absorbing to read Like the lives with little direction that it depicts,you dont know where itis going but Dom makes you want to follow to find out.Having worked extensively with many people who are down and out in that part of North London for 35 years I can vouch for the accuracy of the detail of this manifold existence[if only they could scrounge,..life might almost be tolerable]

Very Well Written Book on Truss Design.

This book is a more modern version of the Simplified Design series that was originally written by Harry Parker and updated by James Ambrose. Mr. Ambrose covers a lot of historical matter about trusses in this book, which is oddly helpful for me with work I do with older buildings. He covers all of the different types of trusses, and gets into detail about common timber and steel trusses.

His analysis and design sections are well written. A lot of structural engineering texts have very turgid language making it hard to decipher the simplest concepts, but Mr. Parker covers in plain every day language how to design a truss that makes the process very simple. The figures are easy to understand, and he gives easy to understand examples. What I found helpful is that he covers vertical trusses extensively and how to analyze them. Vertical trusses are very good for resisting wind loads, and this is the first text I've found to cover them specifically in such detail.

What makes this text more valuable is he covers in detail how to design the connections of trusses. With wood trusses there are a lot of factors to take into account, and he goes through it step by step. He also covers issues such as the loading of top chords of trusses from the vertical live and dead loads, which is often ignored in other texts. Finally, he gets into graphic analysis of trusses, which was done in the days before electronic calculators and then personal computers. I kind of skipped over that part.

I actually sat and read through the text in one evening, which is not something one normally can do with an engineering text. If you are designing trusses, this is a must have book for your library.

The books of the Ambrose serie generally are very good. This book is not the exception.
The Chapter 10 "Design of Steel Trusses" includes Joints in Steel Trusses (very well explained), an important aspect in the design, forgotten for the majority of the designers and structural engineers, but essential in the stability and perfomance of the a truss
In the chapter 16 reviews different forms of trusses searching the maximum efficiency.
This book is a "must have" publication .

Very nice primer on truss design and development

This book is not written by a Pulitzer prize winning author, but it is still very readable. It spoon feeds the technology well enough for an armchair understanding by any "victim" of liberal arts. I'm not sure if the technology is totally up to date because of its mid-90's publication date. But, unless you're actually an engineer or architect relying on the science that's discussed, then it's a very good product.

I found this book incredibly action packed with never before seen "classic" designs. This book is jammed packed with history unlike any other book that has come before it. Mr. White is incredibly knowledgeable in the history of tattooing and at around $100.00 this book is a STEAL! It's 400 pages in a hardcover edition with it's own hardcover case. Worth every penny and then some you will spend on it!

Great Book of Antique Tattoo Designs

Today’s historians study tattoo art with great fascination, and it’s only become an intellectual curiosity in the past 20 years. Why not until that point, I don’t know, but I do remember that by the late 90’s there was greater interest in it. Perhaps there’s something fascinating about the kind of artwork that one would have permanently drawn on himself? Tattoos were worn mostly by sailors, and the designs were usually the same, but the question is why.

Flash From The Bowery is a book of original tattoo stencils from the Black Eye Barbershop on the Bowery and Chatham Square, the same tattoo parlor where the electric tattoo gun was invented. It was on The Bowery where you’d find all the tattoo parlors, the same street where Norman Rockwell got the idea for his painting of the tattooist inking out the sailor’s ex-girlfriends. It was a sleazy block, full of bars, flophouses, and what would eventually become CBGB’s. The designs in this book were the “archive” of Black Eye’s resident artist, and when he died in the 1950’s, an employee saved what he could of their supplies. The designs ended up in the hands of Cliff White, a modern day tattooist. But the designs themselves date back much earlier. In those days you couldn’t go to a Barnes & Noble bookstore and buy a full-color coffee table book of tattoos. The artists would trace or photograph the existing tattoos of their customers, and in exchange give them a discount on a new one.

The only problem is the history of the actual designs. I would love to know the origins of the flowers, skulls, dice, scantily clad women. By Cliff White’s account, most of the customers were sailors (hence the large number of ship tattoos) or circus employees. If there were foreign sailors getting tattoos done at Black Eye’s, then I wonder if the American, British, and European designs were markedly different. I saw a photo of some French criminals who were detained at Ellis Island in the 1900’s, and they had tattoos of women, boxers, snakes, the usual art. I’m going to guess that the cards & dice motif might indicate willingness to take risk, while the half-naked women were reminders of home. If you’re at sea for a few months, and there’ no women on board, perhaps the tattoo satisfies your erotic needs? The skulls could be descended from the memento mori (“remember, one day you will die”) of classical artwork, evoking a reminder of mortality. Paintings with this motto in mind usually placed a flower next to the skull, symbolizing life & death. Perhaps that explains why flowers were so popular in tattooing? Racism is also evident by the tattoos showing stabbed Chinese heads. Though the author assumes this was from the “Yellow Peril,” I believe it is from the US Navy campaign in China in the 1920’s (seen in the film The Sand Pebbles.)

You can include tattoos in the study of US history, and there’s plenty in there to compare the changes in American habits. Back in the 1950’s, tattoos were the kind of thing the wearer kept hidden, but nowadays they’re commonplace. It used to be considered low-class for women to have tattoos, but now I see “respectable” women with all kinds of ink-Japanese koi, scarabs, boyfriends’ names, even old fashioned sailor tattoos (in better quality than the originals.) Perhaps it has a lot to do with women’s rights? I can just imagine a high school student in the 1960’s showing up to school with a visible shoulder tattoo, the principal would’ve thrown a fit. Now, the principal can’t do anything about it. For teenagers, a tattoo has become a symbol that (at least in their own opinion) they’re all grown up.

This book contains an astonishing number of authentic traditional tattoo designs. If you are a traditional tattooer, a tattoo historian, or a folk art enthusiast, this book is worth its weight in gold. Each page is thoughtfully laid out and the designs are boldly and skillfully outlined in black, unlike in "Sailor Jerry's Tattoo Stencils," where the designs are direct photocopies of original acetate stencils. The subject matter is understandably limited here- just about every design can be classified as a ship, an anchor, a woman, a flag, a dragon, a snake, or a rose; but within those subjects there is incredible variety and artistry. The paper quality could be better- the pages are a bit like children's construction paper, but this is more than compensated for by the book's size, and the sheer quality and quantity of the artwork it contains.
