Good EAI Book

If you are looking for a general guide on EAI, this is the book. However, there are some areas where it goes flying over very important concepts. I recommend it if you are and IT Architect trying to understand the general principles of this technology but if you are a "doer" you will be dissapointed.

Intermediate-level in detail, up-to-date

This book has found a place alongside one of my other favorites: "B2B Application Integration" by David S. Linthicum. Like Linthicum's book this one covers a wide range of EAI topics at a high level. However, this book is more up to date and drills down deeper in many topic areas, including more depth in implementation and deployment issues.
I especially liked the chapters on messaging Infrastructures, workflow management and component technologies. One note about the book's approach to components: it does not go deeply into component-based software engineering, but instead covers components from a request broker perspective. Moreover, a large part of the components discussion revolved around CORBA, which is a good conceptual approach but has yet to be widely embraced. The chapters titled "Ensuring Enterprise System Security" and "Supporting Enterprise Intelligence" are also valuable because they reflect contemporary concerns and issues.
The chapter on XML is a bit weaker than the corresponding discussion in "B2B Application Integration" by David S. Linthicum. Linthicum provides a more balance view in his book, especially regarding when not to use XML.
One additional feature that I like about this book is the accompanying web site. The links to specifications, organizations and related material point to a comprehensive collection of resources that not only augment the book, but are invaluable in their own right.
If you're looking for low-level details you will probably not like this book; however, if you want an intermediate-level, panoramic view of EAI this book is an excellent resource.

good book but too high level

I found the book useful in learning concepts but the level of detail was not what I expected. I prefer books that illustrate concepts with detailed examples that get more complicated as you read on. Too much attention is devoted to CORBA and not enough to mapping distributed architecture concepts to newer technologies (J2EE, WebServices). XML material seems a little weak.

"Men don't cook." People tell me this all the time. That's a load of bull--we've been charring giant slabs of meat ever since we discovered fire.

The difference now is that we have better things to do. Why slave over a hot stove when we could be cooking up plans for a golf outing? Or warming up at the gym? Or making things sizzle in the bedroom?

Here's why: because sometimes you want a break from the local Burger-Rama. Sometimes you want a decent home-cooked meal.

Not worth it, you say? It is if you use the can. The can is fast. The can is healthy. It's even cheaper than that Burger-Rama mega-deal. The can holds the secret to every great guy meal.

When you come home from an insane day at work and open the fridge to find nothing but a slice of 3-week-old pizza, remember the can. Good for a clueless college student

I bought this cook book and 2 others like it for my 20 something young sons for Christmas. They were constantly calling me asking for recipes and cooking advice so I thought I would give them some cookbooks. These covered board books spell out every recipe in language a clueless teenager should be able to understand. Plus they are easy to wipe clean. There a pictures of everything and a grocery shopping list to help. The recipes are simple, easy and seems like they would fill up a hungry college student. None of the recipes require weird spices, foods or utensils --they are all user/student friendly. My sons has successfully tried a few of the recipes and didn't burn anything down.
I also bought a Man and A Tailgate plan for my sports nut.

Excellent entry point into the world of cooking

I bought this for my gentleman friend (age 56) who cooks meat on the grill but not much else. He was ecstatic. I was afraid he might be offended/insulted by the toddler style cardboard pages, but he was pleased that he could throw it (literally) in his truck and take it into the grocery store on his way home from work without destroying it. The food is surprisingly good and only requires the meat department and canned goods aisles, nothing else. Does not require any kitchen equipment other than pots and pans. Not exactly haute cuisine, but for someone who wants something other than drive through burgers and pizza delivery for dinner once in a while and doesn't want to spend forever trying to buy ingredients and spices and cook, this is an excellent book.

Great Book for the Beginners, or someone looking for simple, good meals

I bought this as a gift for my nephew and i'm glad i did. Its a great starter book for a young man that is new to cooking. The ingredients are simple, easy to find, and accessible to most. Its not a gourmet cook book by any means, but its a good book to help a young person get more comfortable with being in the kitchen and fending for themselves. I can see this book as being perfect for a teenager or a college kid making meals for themselves. I'm sure after mastering these recipes a person would probably graduate to more complicated and interesting dishes, and i think that this book provides that confidence and stepping stone to get there. Not that it ventures into that territory, but once a person gains that confidence that they can actually cook something other than a hot pocket that actually provides decent nutrition and sustenance such as the things in this book, they will be more willing to branch out to other great meals/recipes. Bottom line, this book is a great start for some one new to cooking, or looking for easy, less complicated meals that are simple to make.

I also bought the "Second Helping" follow up to this book at the same time and HIGHLY recommend it. I'm not saying that this book is bad, but I think the recipes in the 2nd Helping book are allot better and a little more appealing to my tastes. I highly recommend buying them in a pair. That is what i did. These books are STURDY. They come with those THICK pages like you would find in a kids book. So i'm sure you can prevent ruining the book with accidental splashes and spills, which fits right in a beginner.

I might buy another set for myself just to get quick and easy ideas for myself.

EXCELLENT VIETNAM WAR NOVEL WITH TIMELY TWIST

Donald Bodey's Vietnam War novel F.N.G. is a powerful, engaging story about one man's tour of duty. While many Vietnam Veterans have come forward in recent years to tell their stories, Bodey chose not to write an autobiographical account, but specifically, a novel based on his experiences. While few ex-soldiers could masterfully write a novel of war, Bodey's skill has created for the Vietnam War what Erich Maria Remarque accomplished for World War I in All Quiet on the Western Front.

At the center of Bodey's novel is Gabriel Saunders, the "F.N.G." (F---g New Guy). Gabriel has been drafted into the army, and when he arrives in Vietnam, he is scared and unsure of himself. To make matters worse, he has the horrendous experience of seeing his newly made friend killed before his eyes the first day he arrives. From there, the reader is taken through Gabriel's tour of duty over the course of a year as he matures as a soldier, going from being the new guy to the leader of his squad. Vietnam soldiers were transitioned in and out of their units, rather than all arriving together, so as new soldiers came in, old soldiers left, thereby continually rotating so the squad always had some seasoned soldiers and some FNG's. The effect of this rotation is new soldiers having more experienced ones to learn from, but it also means seasoned soldiers are the envy of new ones. Bodey emphasizes the psychological weight of their remaining time on the soldiers, who always knew to the day how much time they had left, and how they pondered their chances of surviving a certain number of days.

This 2007 publication of F.N.G. is Loving Healing Press's revised and expanded version of the original 1987 novel. The revised edition's major change is the immensely effective opening chapter of the novel, set in the present day during the War in Iraq. In this chapter, Gabriel, returned from Vietnam for over thirty years, is going hunting with his grandson, Seth. Gabriel is angry that his grandson will soon be leaving to serve in Iraq. Gabriel knows war's horrors and does not want Seth to have the same traumatic experiences. Unknown to Seth, Gabriel is contemplating shooting his grandson--just enough to wound him so he cannot be sent to Iraq. Gabriel would rather see his grandson limp the rest of his life than suffer the far greater psychological and physical hell of war. That a man would intentionally hurt his grandson as a way to protect him is far more than a clever plot device. It makes readers consider whether in Gabriel's shoes, having undergone his own war experiences, they would not do the same to protect a loved one.

I will not spoil the story by revealing whether Gabriel goes through with injuring his grandson, but after reading the rest of the novel, Gabriel's motivations are clearly understood. While F.N.G. does not have much of a plot, its strength lies in its descriptive, realistic character depictions. The details of a soldier's life are presented with gritty realism intermixed with humor. The reader comes away with a real sense of the camaraderie so vital for survival among soldiers. The novel's dramatic conclusion provides a strong example of how war affects a soldier. While post-traumatic stress disorder is a term well known today, few authors have portrayed it so effectively; Gabriel comes to realize something has changed within him, something he cannot yet define but which he knows will haunt him. Donald Bodey, himself a Vietnam soldier, has captured his personal experiences in fiction, never seeking to be sensational or sentimental, but rather to depict the Vietnam War realistically. The author [...] provides additional information about F.N.G., including a glossary of Vietnam War terms.

F.N.G. is a book everyone would benefit from reading, especially families of military men and women, so they will understand what their loved ones go through. Members of the US military and US government should also read it to understand what happens to those the government sends to war, especially wars where it is questionable whether the United States should be involved. Very few war novels would receive such a recommendation from me.

War is Hell in this Nam Novel!

Author Donald Bodey has crafted a true Vietnam War classic that captures what being a grunt was all about. His revised novel " F.N.G." has even added a new twist to the old war novel genre as the book's hero considers shooting his grandson - thus wounding him and preventing him from going off to this war in Iraq! The whole book is fresh, which is very difficult to do considering all the books, and movies that have been written on the war in Nam.

Bodey has a writing style that makes even something as simple as the rain falling feel real. He has created drama and great entertainment in this thrilling fictional account of war that often at times, feels as if you are reading someone's autobiography.

Readers may find their hearts beating a little faster, or a experience a moist eye, or even feel a slight pang of fear creeping up their spine while devouring this book. It flows with both action and powerful emotions. This is the kind of book that could become a huge Hollywood blockbuster as a movie. This book is really that good!

If you were only going to read just one novel about the Vietnam War then this would be my choice and my recommendation! It is a most compelling account and will not an easy book to forget or put down.

I read this book when it first came out in the 80's, liked it then and having reread it, like it even more now. I will have to admit that I know the author, but if I didn't like the book, I wouldn't write a bad review, I just wouldn't write anything.

I think this is a F&^%*# Good Book. First person is tough to make work for an entire novel, and Don's editor/publisher tried to have him abandon it until they read further into the book. It is a straight forward and honest novel with truth on every page. It is not a political tract which only increases both its truth and honesty.

One thing I especially like are Don's metaphors. They are wonderfully descriptive and within the voice of a house painter/draftee. They help make the strangness of war part of the reader's everyday as it became so for the protagonist, Gabe. The new introductory story is of a piece with the original book, and I hope Don works this story into another novel.

If you haven't yet, buy and read this book, but even if you bought and read it before, do it again. You'll thank me for the suggestion.

Excellent and detailed view of a very interesting period of history

If you are interested in the period of history known as the First Tetrarchy, and its aftermath, this is a must-read book. The author has done an excellent job of synthesizing all the sources and information to create a cogent and clear point of view as to what really happened, and why. For those interested in the coinage of the time, the author's use of the numismatic evidence will be very compelling. My only criticism is that the editing is not up to standard from time to time, leading to some confusion for those who are not already familiar with this period.

Overall, a very well done and interesting book, highly recommended for anyone interested in the subject.

The loyal and maligned henchman and the usurpers

Galerius and the will of Diocletian is a superb book. It is largely about the little-known and much vilified (by the early Christians, for whom he was the main persecutor alongside Diocletian) Galerius, the loyal and capable Caesar to Diocletian and his successor as senior Augustus. It is also about Diocletian himself who looms as a colossus dominating his colleagues and his, and the Empire's, political ideology, and how the Christians threatened it. Finally, it is about the unravelling of Diocletian's political construct, compromised and then destroyed by the usurping sons of two of Diocletian's colleagues who were not supposed to reign: Maxentius `(on of Maximius) and Constantine (son of Constance).

The book is a political history of the period between AD 284, when Diocletian seized power to December 311 and his death. Galerius, his chosen successor, had died a few months before after failing to defeat Maxentius and avenge Severus, his own nominee as Augustus in the West, and after having passed an Edict of Toleration that stopped the Persecution of Christians. One of the main interests of this book is to present a clear and very plausible explanation of the causes of Galerius' failure to perpetuate Diocletian's ruling system. According to the author, it was not, as often mentioned, because Diocletian's system was not dynastic. Rather, it was because the key ingredient - Diocletian's domination of the college and his unquestionable supremacy - was missing. Despite Galerius' qualities, and Bill Leadbetter shows that he had many, he was unable to exercise a similar level of authority and attract the same kind of respect from his colleagues as his former Emperor had.

As the author shows rather well, Galerius' problems started straight after Diocletian's rather exceptional abdication, as he was confronted with Constance Chlorus, who had also become Augustus and who was older (and therefore senior) than him. Galerius, despite his efforts, had to accept Constantine's usurpation and concede to him the title of Caesar and the rule in Gaul, Spain and Britain after the death of Constance Chlorus. He was also unable to put down the rebellion of Maxentius. The later seems to have been a rather shrewd political operator. He called his father Maxentius out of his semi-forced retirement (he had rather reluctantly complied with Diocletian's orders and abdicated at the same time as the Senior Augustus) to benefit from his military experience.

The overall assessment of Galerius' reign as Diocletian's Caesar (AD 293 to AD 305) and then as senior Emperor (AD 305 to AD 311) is far from being entirely negative. However, his major achievements seemed to have occurred during the former period, during which he was Diocletian's faithful and talented lieutenant, particularly his crushing victory over the Persians, which Diocletian converted into a diplomatic triumph, and on the Danube frontier. In other words, the core thesis of the author is that he was at his best when being Diocletian's henchman, but he was unable to step into his shoes.

Related to this assessment is a detailed and fascinating explanation regarding the causes and the responsibilities of such a failure. There are also careful analyses and explanations provided about specific key events such as Diocletian's amazing abdication - the only Roman Emperor to ever renounce the supreme power and retire - and the Great Persecution. Contrary to the very biased and misleading views of Lactancius, which many historians still tend to promote, both events were, according to the author, very much Diocletian's decisions,

A further benefit of this book is that it also draws interesting portraits of the actions and characters of most of the other less well-known key players, none of which were insignificant. One of these is Constance Chlore, Constantine's remarkable and quite formidable father whose own achievements are occulted by those of his son. Another impressive character was Diocletian's colleague as Augustus (and friend). As the author makes clear, Diocletian and these two (and possibly Galerius, although he seems to have much younger than the others) probably knew each other ever since Diocletian's accession which they are supported. As Bill Leadbetter shows very well, it is this knowledge, predictability and trust between the old comrades in arms which was entirely missing with both Maxentius and Constantine. Neither of the two was intended or supposed to reign and neither seems to have been trusted by either Diocletian or by Galerius, his number two.

Once again: a superb, original and convincing read, which is well worth five stars.

Galerius and the Diocletianic Reform of the Roman Empire

'Following the “Crisis of the Third Century,” Diocletian (r., 284-305), instituted widespread reforms in the Roman Empire, not least forming the “Tetrarchy,” appointing a co-emperor and two understudies. Galerius was Diocletian’s understudy, and succeeded him in 305, ruling until his death from disease in 311. In this volume, Prof. Leadbetter (Cowan U., Australia) gives us a life and times of Galerius based on a critical evaluation of documents, coins, inscriptions, histories (noting Christian ones are suspect, as Galerius was a persecutor), and more. He uses Galerius’ career, and interactions with many other actors in the period, to examine the nature of Diocletian’s reforms. Leadbetter does not resolve the issue of whether Diocletian was a radical innovator with a comprehensive plan of reform in mind, or merely made adjustments to institutions based on practicality and precedent (e.g., there were cases of co-emperors in the past, military and provincial organization had often been restructured, etc.), but he does help throw considerable light on the period. Part of the Routledge series “Roman Imperial Biographies,” this volume is a valuable read for anyone interested in the later Roman Empire.'

About the Author

James N. Danziger is a Research Professor of Political Science at the University of California, Irvine, where he also has served as Chair of the Department of Political Science, campus-wide Dean of Undergraduate  Education, and Chair of the Academic Senate. He is recipient of many honors and awards, including a Marshall Scholarship (to Great Britain), a Foreign Area Fellowship, Woodrow Wilson Fellowship, Phi Beta Kappa, and an IBM Faculty Award. He received the first UC Irvine Distinguished Faculty Lectureship Award for Teaching in 1987, the UC Irvine Distinguished Service Award in 1997, and the campus’ highest honor, the Extraordinarius Award in 2009. His Ph.D. is from Stanford University, and he has held visiting appointments at the universities of Aarhus (Denmark), Pittsburgh, and Virginia. His research has received awards from the American Political Science Association and the American Society for Public Administration. He has published extensively, particularly on information technology and politics, and been an active participant in local politics.

 

Charles Anthony Smith received his PhD in political science from the University of California-San Diego (2004) and his JD from the University of Florida (1987). He is an Associate Professor at the University of California-Irvine. His books include The Rise and Fall of War Crimes Trials: from Charles I to Bush II (NY: Cambridge University Press, 2012), and Globalizing Human Rights (NY: Routledge 2014). He has published articles in Law & Society Review, Political Research Quarterly, Justice System Journal, International Political Science Review, Judicature, Journal of Human Rights, Election Law Journal, Studies in Law, Politics & Society, Human Rights Review, Journal of International Relations & Development among other journals and published chapters in edited volumes with Cambridge University Press, Oxford University Press, and University of Pennsylvania Press, among others. He has served as guest editor for special issues of the Journal of Human Rights and Human Rights Review. His research considers the role of courts, law, and litigation in the contestation over a variety of types of rights. He considers this unifying research theme using a variety of methodologies in the context of the United States, in comparative contexts, and in the realm of international relations and globalization. He has won a variety of awards for both his teaching and research.

About the Author
Gerald Garratt spent most of his career, apart from wartime service, at the Science Museum, London, and for many years he was in charge of the Communications Collections. He had completed six of this book's seven chapters before his death in 1989, and subsequently his daughter Susan Garratt has edited and prepared the final chapter based on material Gerald had collected from Marconi.

Radio was as much the culmination of the work of a series of scientists in the 19th Century, starting with Faraday, as it was an invention by Marconi. This book aims to illustrate the contributions made by these scientists and show how each was dependent upon the work and ideas of his predecessors; Faraday, Henry, Maxwell, Hughes, Fitzgerald, Hertz, Lodge and Marconi. The book represents the result of a long period of study by a man who knew the story well and researched it thoroughly; although Gerald Garratt died in 1989 the manuscript has been completed by his daughter.
Gerald Garratt had a special interest in what might be termed the "pre-history" of radio. His book therefore outlines the sequence of development from Faraday's first prediction and concept of the electromagnetic field, the mathematical definition of the conditions for propagation of waves by Maxwell, the demonstration of their physical existence by Hertz, identification of the need for resonance between transmitter and receiver by Lodge and finally Marconi's successful practical application and "invention".

Unique Insights to Electromagnetic and Radio History

Garratt's text is one of very few sources to present Faraday's long forgotten 1832 letter in which he predicted the existence of electromagnetic waves while James Clerk Maxwell was still in diapers. Garratt was especially interested in the work of Heinrich Hertz, and his friendship with Frau Hertz, who fled Nazi Germany for Britain in 1936, enabled him to acquire some of Hertz's original manuscripts for the museum at which he was employed. Garratt's Early History of Radio is written from the perspective of a passionate technologist eager and able to fill in the gaps of standard historical treatments. His work offers many unique insights I've found no where else.

This is one of the rare very well-written and technical books on the history of radio. Of course, Wikipedia provides the same information, but there is a narrative here that is both very readable and authoritative. And, unlike radio history books written by non-technical authors, this one clearly and correctly explains the subject. The only weakness is that there are no schematics, e.g., RLC circuit diagrams, but that is eclipsed by the author's obvious mastery of the English language.
