About the Author
Leo Schelbert is professor emeritus at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He has authored or edited several books and some fifty articles that explore the history of Swiss abroad as part of the European and Neo-European rise to world dominance between 1500 and 1900. Among other books he wrote the first edition of the Historical Dictionary of Switzerland. In 2006 he was awarded the Swiss Abroad of the Year Prize 2006 by the Free Democratic Party (FDP) International, a section of one of Switzerland’s leading political parties.

This is how you write a debut book

The authors' knowledge of archaeology, historic art and Native American sites was evident through the book. The story which starts off in 1952 is like one large jigsaw puzzle that takes the course of the book to piece together before finally seeing the whole picture.

Erica Kesling didn't have an easy childhood after her father died. Her credit ruined and blackballed from being able to use her degree in underwater archaeologist she now works for a large company on a different coast as a land archeologist looking for a way to make those pay who had a part in setting her up. From here the author takes us on a journey that arouses your curiosity as to what is really going on. Its full of crafty plotting and intrigues throughout.

There were a few loose ends that I am hoping will be wrapped up in future books but this reader is happy to have found a new romantic suspense author and I look forward to more books from her.

Concrete Evidence is a Heavy Hitter

From the opening scene the thrills and chills drew me in. I love the smart, sexy heroine, Erica. As for the hero, Lee, all I can say is I'm a sucker for brainiacs with pecs. The secret life of archeologists is deftly woven into the plot, and a look at this fascinating world is a treat you won't find in many books. I can honestly say I did NOT see the twists and turns coming, and they kept me reading late into the night. This is one of the best romantic thrillers I've read...ever. Grant's plot is tightly woven, unpredictable and stands with the best. I admit that I love intellectual thrillers and this is one of them!

Archeology, Romance and Suspense...Need I Say More?

High stakes, fast paced and the kind of in-depth knowledge of ancient artifacts only an honest-to-goodness archeologist would know. I was amazed to learn that Grant's most unique subplots are actually ripped right from history. The romance between Erica and Lee has that gripping, heart-in-your throat tension. Both are motivated by goals that may destroy the other, which keeps you reading FAR into the night! This is a stellar introduction to a very talented debut author. Highly recommended read.

Barbara McKean is currently an assistant professor in theatre education and outreach for the School of Theatre Arts at the University of Arizona. Before teaching at the University level, Bobbi was a professional actress and teaching artist. She served as Director of Education at the Seattle Children's Theatre and as Artistic Director of the Seattle Peace Theatre, where she directed collaborations with young people and artists from Seattle, Moscow, and Zurich.

Robert Rauschenberg is one of the most important visual artists of the second half of the twentieth century. In Random Order, Branden Joseph examines Rauschenberg's work in the context of the American neo-avant-garde. One of the foundations of his study is Rauschenberg's professional relationship with experimental composer John Cage. From the moment of their encounter at Black Mountain College in 1952, Joseph argues, Rauschenberg and Cage initiated a new avant-garde project, one that approached the idea of difference not in terms of negation but as a positive force. Claiming that Rauschenberg's work cannot be understood solely from the standpoint of the Frankfurt School -- whose theories have dominated discussions of avant-garde and neo-avant-garde aesthetics -- Joseph turns to the theoretical positions of Gilles Deleuze and Jacques Derrida. Rauschenberg's neo-avant-garde was not a simple repetition of earlier avant-garde movements, Joseph shows, but a series of practices that opposed the rise of postwar spectacle, commodification, and mass conformity.

Beginning with the White Paintings, Joseph examines Rauschenberg's artistic development from 1951 to 1971. He looks at the black paintings, Red Paintings, Elemental Paintings and Elemental Sculptures, Combines and Combine paintings, transfer drawings and silkscreens, performances, and explorations in art and technology. Joseph's study not only offers new interpretations of Rauschenberg's work, but also deepens our understanding of the entire neo-avant-garde project.

This study of Rauschenberg will doubtless make itself pretty much indispensable in the literature on the artist. It's a brilliant study- Joseph is in command of the literature on the topic, demonstrates a great deal of theoretical sophistication, as well as showing a lot of sensitivity to the works and their context.

Joseph's contention is to explore Rauschenberg's work in relation to the Neo-avant-garde, seeking to show that his work (along with his colleague John Cage) was neither a farcical repetition of 1920s Dada (ie jaded attempts to "shock" the viewer), nor was it an ironic casting-off of the avant-garde project in favour of a capitulation to commodity capitalism (ie through his pop culture references and so on). Instead, Joseph argues- convincingly- that Rauschenberg (and Cage) sought to escape the tyranny of the self- the "ego" of Absract Expressionism, in order to open up perception to differentiation and multiplicity- an attempt to open up a space beyond the totalised structures of late capitalism. (Joseph's concerns give away his being an ex-student of Benjamin Buchloh- hence these particularly Frankfurt School concerns). So for Joseph, Rauschenberg's White Paintings, or his Tire Print with John Cage, were not simply juvenile pranks, nor farcical, worn-out shock tactics, but serious attempts to disclocate habitual modes of perception and cognition- in this way, Rauschenberg both differs from, and continues the avant-garde project of political change.

Joseph makes a good case- in particular, his first chapter, on Rauschenberg and Cage, where he examines their interest in temporality and flux in relation to the ideas of Bergson, is quite brilliant. But the level of discussion is sustained throughout- it's a compelling and fascinating read which will doubtless provoke a great deal of thought.

As you would expect from the MIT Press, its not a study for the lay reader- the usual phalanx of thinkers are brought to bear- Foucault, Deleuze, Bataille and the like- although Joseph draws on them judiciously, without detracting from the focus of his study. In fact its very readable indeed- Joseph hasn't succumbed (yet) to the puffed-up rhetorical excesses of some of his October colleagues.

nice panoramic view

Like all books from Stillwell, it is a well structured and written book with a treasure trove of things. I teach a course "teaching math from a historical perspective" now for the 8th time which has a similar scope: a panoramic view over many different topics in math. I had used an other book from Stillwell (mathematics and its history) before for that class. The "elements" would be even better suited. Every chapter finishes with a section on "philosophical remarks" and a section with "historical remarks". Part of the book goes further than any other book for a more general audience: examples are "reverse mathematics" or the "Koenig infinity lemma". The book will definitely enrich any course with a broader scope.

"Elementary," but full of sophisticated insights

A lovely traversal of "elementary" topics in number theory, computability, algebra, geometry, calculus, combinatorics, probability, and logic. Although I was familiar with most of the material, Stillwell's presentation was full of new insights. The connections drawn between topology and combinatorics (e.g. how the Bolzano-Weierstrass theorem is a special case of the König infinity lemma) were particularly enlightening. And some more advanced topics are taken up at the end of the book (like the unsolvability of the isomorphism problem for groups). Stillwell's historical and philosophical comments were great fun, and his remarks on "reverse mathematics" (which gauges the strength of the axioms needed to prove a theorem) gave me my first taste of this relatively new field. Experts will find this book a breezy and enjoyable read, and beginners will learn a lot thanks to Stillwell's characteristically clear exposition.

Interesting and informative but at times difficult

As someone who has taken many advanced calculus and introductory probability courses many years ago, I found the coverage of these and related subjects and of Euclid's Elements quite good. In several cases, particularly infinite series, the book clarified some mysteries I never did understand as a student.

On the negative side, I fault the book format, i.e., being an image of pages and not a digital Kindle, made reading very difficult at times. In particular figures were often discussed on one or rwo pages prior. Plus the author's use of notation sometimes assumed the reader was reading the book in one or two sittings -- not the case for me.

Using an approach that combines the cognitive insights of theorists like David Bordwell, Noël Carroll, and Murray Smith with the reflective Wittgensteinian methods for considering film employed by Stanley Cavell, Stephen Mulhall, and William Rothman, Flory shows how these films scrutinize the state of race in America, induce their viewers to do so as well, and illuminate the ways in which categories of race have defined and continue to direct much of our vision of the moral self and what counts as appropriate moral sensibility.

Cadence of Love brings hot cowboy-soldiers that are looking for new beginnings and a reason to start over. Can you handle the heat?

Alaina Bradford is a warrior. Her life has crashed and burned, but she manages to raise and protect a beautiful little girl in the middle of it all. When she meets two gorgeous cowboys offering help, she is no fool to decline. Lucky for her, they are not only cowboys, they are soldiers with all the accolades.

Leland and Burke have just left the army and are looking for something to hold on to. When they see Alaina and Lizzy, they know what they want, and they will do anything to get it. Like all real soldiers should be, they are loyal, faithful, hot and dangerous.

This book is well-written with amazing characters and a good world-built for a series. There is no cliffhanger at the end, but there is a promise of great tales in the future.

The author has created a group of soldiers that bands together for their next step after military life. All characters, main and secondary, are multi-dimensional with something interesting to tell.

I believe the love story was a bit rushed, but it is so beautifully described that it doesn't take away from the book. The passionate scenes are scorching hot with some very original moments.

This is my first book from Ms. Brooke, but definitely not my last. The author's writing style is creative, innovative and very well-rounded. She portrays characters with heart and soul, gives them life and makes the reader befriends them.

I would recommend this book for anyone that enjoys a very spicy romance, with true heroes and a kick-ass heroine.

Alaina is in a bind. She is working two jobs, 7 days a week, 22 hours a day, trying to support herself and her 8 year old daughter. Her husband left 6 months ago after 11 years of marriage. He told her he wants to be with other women. Alaina found kiddie porn on their home computer after he left, so she really does not feel that bad about him leaving. But it would be great if the authorities could find him and force him to pay child support.

Brody and Leland are retired Special Forces, who walked away from the Army after 12 years. They are tired of standing by, and being told to do nothing by their superiors, just in case their superiors "might" be able to use one of the "thugs" in the desert areas for some other reason.

Brody and Leland are traveling through the small town where Alaina lives, and want to check into the motor inn where she works. Alaina, burning the candle at both ends, has fallen asleep at the registration desk. So of course, Brody has to wake her up, and falls for her instantly. But so does Leland. They manage to convince her to go out to dinner with the both of them, and to bring her 8 year old daughter, too.

The plot from here is a little contrived at times. We have a special forces team, that ALL walked away at the same time ( 7 men and a woman). They band together to assist Alaina when her husband kidnaps her daughter. They all go to live together on Leland's family farm. They decide to form a vigilante justice band, to take out mideastern baddies that the U.S. does not want to touch. Oh, and Leland, Brody, and Alaina form a ménage, that no one on the team blinks an eye at.

There are some really good secondary characters introduced here, including all the team members. They are funny, witty, and the interaction between all of them is really adorable. And how all these big, bad men ( and woman) take to an 8 year old little girl is absolutely heartwarming. The sex scenes with Alaina, Brody, and Leland are really hot. This series could go really far, but I had issues with some of the editing. And I am still having issues as to how a 1st LT can out-rank a Capt. The grammatical use of words like Peak for Peek, and things like that need to be edited out. In all honesty, I did download the second book in the series, because I really want to see where she takes these characters. I cannot give this 5 stars, just because of the editing issues.

For Maya Banks' fans, this is KGI on crack! Can't wait to get my hands on the next one. Lots of fantastic characters so should be many, many more installments of Breaking Protocol.
