About the Author
Mark L. Savickas, PhD, is chair emeritus and professor in the Department of Behavioral and Community Health Sciences at the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine. He also serves as an adjunct professor of counselor education at Kent State University, where he has taught career counseling to more than 5,000 students since 1973. He serves as president of the Counseling Psychology Division of the International Association of Applied Psychology (2010-2014).

For his work in career counseling, he has received the John L. Holland Award for Outstanding Achievement in Personality and Career Research from the Counseling Psychology Division of the American Psychological Association (1994), the Eminent Career Award from the National Career Development Association (1996), the Distinguished Achievement Award from the Society for Vocational Psychology (2006), and honorary doctorates from the University of Lisbon (Portugal) and the University of Pretoria (South Africa).

I'm glad to have come across this book recently and recommend it highly to anyone involved in real estate, commercial or residential. The Author did a fantastic job breaking down all aspects of what to look for when buying commercial real estate which can be also highly useful for sellers as well in preparing their properties for sale.

The book gives you a very strong foundation in all areas of how commercial real estate works, leaving the reader with a very good overview of what to focus on prior to making the offer as well as during their 'free-look' period. I learned more reading this book than I learned in my college real estate courses.

Definatly a Rhetorical exigence

While people outside of the field will find the arguments inside this book tedious, anyone who is interested in the field of Rhetoric MUST have this book on their shelf. Black calls into question the monopoly that the Neo-Aristotelians had in rhetorical criticism in the early twentieth century, and through his arguments exposes areas which required new methods to produce understanding. Black shows the possibilities of rhetorical criticism and opens up new possibilities for the field. While the arguments and examples are dated by today's standards, Blacks book demands a response from the field that as of now hasn't been fully satisfied.

A Study of Methodology

Professor Black tells us that rhetorical criticism has to do with a specialized form of critism and goes on in the first chapter to discuss the nature of the critic's role. In chapter two he talks about how rhetoric has to do with much more than spoken communication. He says that neo-Aristotelian criticism is by far the most dominant mode of rhetorical criticism presently used at the time of the book's publication.
The elements of neo-Aristotelianism include: 1) forensic, 2) deliberative, and 3) epideictic. The classifications of proof consist of: 1) logical, 2) pathetic, and 3) ethical. A section is devoted to rhetorical cristism and how it includes must more than the spoken word. From here he places rhetoric in a more general context.
Critics from various historical epochs are cited. He contributes his own thoughts to the issue as it is passed down from one generation to the next. This book makes some insightful points and is worthy of attention for those interested in continuing the discussion.

Steven F. Dansky, publisher of Christopher Street Press, has been an activist, photographer, and writer for more than fifty years. He was a founder of the Effeminist Movement and an original member of Gay Liberation Front. Now Dare Everything: Tales of HIV-Related Psychotherapy and Nobody's Children: Orphans of the HIV Epidemic, his books on the HIV/AIDS epidemic were critical early responses to a global health crisis. A clear yet sophisticated introduction. Most undergraduate architectural surveys are organized around either time periods or themes. Chronological approaches tend to be linear and concentrate on form, thematic approaches on overlapping phenomena and the history of ideas. Professor Bergdoll's book ably does both. It combines a complex yet lucid historical narrative with excursions into the history of ideas, developing social and political forces, and the development of new aesthetic and formal problems. Greatest hits include Somerset House, The Crystal Palace, French and English train stations, The Red House, German Romantic Monuments and Rundbogenstil buildings, The Eiffel Tower. The range of topics and the depth of treatment makes this a valuable undergraduate text and though challenging a good text for the architect and fans of architecture.

History of architecture

this book must be read with Modern Architecture by Oxford in order to understand the history of architecture. This book covers the must needed areas of the field including, the hut to Palladio, and others up until the rise of modernism, where incidently the book Modern Architecture takes over. I recommend this book in concordance to that book and for the architecture student whether for class or not.

Can a survey book be any better than this one?

This superb book provides a great overview of the period it covers. It provides a springboard into a vast subject area. Like a well done modern textbook, it has wonderful images of the buildings, lots of margin space for notes, fine paper and durable high quality binding, an excellent index with over 1500 items, an index of all images with source and dates, a very useful bibliography that also makes recommendations for further reading on specific topics covered, a glossary of special terms not easily found online, and a comprehensive graphic timeline. The Oxford series has done a masterful job in all ways, coupled with eye-pleasing graphics. Each page also has (in addition to a page number) a label, identifying the chapter topic on the left and page subject on the right. A model of perfection for all physical books on art and architecture.

Most importantly, the intelligent writing is clear, well organized, and concise yet deep. Every paragraph has insights, and invites the interested reader to delve into the topic in greater depth. The author provides the essential facts of places, dates, and persons but his real contribution is the presentation of the linkage between human ideas and architectural form. Architecture comes alive as an expression of competing ideals and aspirations at the forefront of social changes.

So, with thought-invoking and insightful writing, and a perfect physical book, what else does a demanding architecture history student or enthusiast get? How about an online Amazon "Look Inside" feature that allows you to easily search for any word used in the book, to find each page it is used on, with the sentence it is located in. This is one marriage of books and technology that makes the grade.

But perfection is never enough. I now crave large Ultra HD images I could display on my big screen TV screen to accompany the reading of the book. I know that too will eventually come.

What's the secret ingredient in the Fig Pudding?

This is an excellent book! Told as a story by the narrator, we experience a little bit about each of his 4 brothers and 1 sister. Each one is a true character in every sense of the word, but at the same time, is very realistic. This is a very real family with characters that I just fell in love with. They are not always as nice as can be and they make mistakes - even the adults. We follow the family through a year in their lives (all from the point of view of the oldest child). There are ups and downs, but in the end everyone does love each other and is there to support each other.
This is a wonderful book about the enduring strength of family and the love and support that can be found in them. There are moments that will make the reader laugh at loud and others that will bring a tear to the eye of even the hardest individual. I truly wish this book had gained more recognition.
The opportunities for writing activities and discussions based on the book are endless with a little creativity. I fully intend on using this book in my classroom and hope others will as well. Like other Ralph Fletcher books, this is quality literature for students and adults - not simply a kid's book.
Why 5 stars?:
This book is incredibly well written with very real characteristics. It brings the reader through a variety of emotions as the narrator tells us about his family and the events that occur over the course of a year. The chance to engage students in sharing and discussing literature are excellent. I highly recommend this book for school libraries, and literature circles in the classroom. Parents should be encouraged to read this book with their children as a bonding experience of the discussions about family that will undoubtedly come out.

Fig Pudding

I just finished the book Fig Pudding. It is a great book. I was sad when Brad died because it touched my heart and all of the character's hearts too. My favorite part is when Uncle Eddie said,"Did you add a new ingredient?". It was funny. I wonder what book Ralph Fletcher likes the most? I wonder if this book was based on his real life? I wonder if he had a brother that died? The mood kept on changing in the story. That is why I liked it.

Great of 3rd Grade and up

I first heard this book as a third grader- my teacher read it to our class. It loved it then: the characters were lovable, the writing was amusing and rich, and the story was captivating and memorable. So memorable that 8 years later, I borrowed this book from the library to reread and re-enjoy. I highly recommend this book to 3rd- 5th graders as a independent read or older kids for a quick read.

This book is hard to find in book stores, so buy online or borrow from the library.
