Extraordinary and Unique Interpretation of Biblical Events

Dr. Salibi delivers, once more, a literary gem. He combines his vast historical and linguistic knowledge, his travel experiences, his knowledge of the traditions of peoples of Arabia and their cultures, his wit and his superior research and analytical capabilities to weave stories of what "might have been". He challenges the accepted interpretations of the events in the Old Testament (Torah) and presents what could easily be a more authentic shade of the truth. Knowing both Arabic and old Hebrew, he combines that knowledge to re-read the events, analyze them in this book (and two or three other books), and comes up with stories that could be what people believed before the hands of later-day censorship re-wrote and dictated what we believe today. The persons of the bible are now real people doing day-to-day things, or mythical Gods fighting and winning or losing (A la Greek and Roman mythological traditions). Some of the individuals stories are shown to be probably made up of several stories combined into one. Adam, Noah, and others, are now more realistically possible. Whether this is what happened or not is impossible to know. But this "Second enlightened Opinion" is absolutely welcome to those who value the Truth, as revealed or deduced through intense and thorough analysis and original deduction. This book, together with the other related titles by Dr. Salibi, would create a revolution in how we think about our holy books, were we to live in a less censored World. This is a must read for anyone interested in the monotheistic religions and who is open minded.

History rewritten

As you read this book, you might think that Kamal Salibi is a police detective rather than a historian. Employing his sharp analytical skills and his perfection of semitic languages, Salibi provides an interpretation of parts of the Old Testament that is by far, different from most of the versions that we've read or heard.

This is the second book based on Salibi's hypothesis which has it that the events of the Old Testament did not happen in Palestine but rather took place in the slopes of Hijaz and Assir (in today's Saudi Arabia).

His first book in which he unveiled his new theory is the Bible Came from Arabia, which appeared in the early 80s.

Unlike what a reader might expect, the style of the book is attractive and contains a lot of Salibi's wit, which draws the non-historian reader away from boredom.

The book is a classic. If you plan to buy it and read it, it would certainly be a good choice.

It's no secret that 19th century and early 20th century biblical scholars and archaeologists thought that a lot of biblical history actually emerged from the Arabian Peninsula. Now after a century of political correctness and downright mis-representation, the truth begins to come out. A Jewish kingdom in Yemen!!! And now one takes a closer look??

Charisma is Founded On "Understanding Human Nature"

Eminent psychologist Alfred Adler's (1870-1937), "Understanding Human Nature" is a ground- breaking book outlining the dynamics, psychology and neurosis of human nature. For me, Adler's salient point in his "Individual Psychology" is that we are all slaves to our motivations. Whatever, driving need within all of us, move us to act in fulfilling that need. Adler says,"...A change of attitude in adult life need not necessarily lead to a change of behavior pattern. The psyche does not change its foundation; the individual retains the same tendencies in childhood and in maturity, leading us to deduce that her goal in life is unaltered." (P.4) He further asserts, "A person's mental life is determined by his goals. No human being can think, feel, wish, or dream without all these activities being determined, continued, modified and directed toward an ever-present objective." (P. 15).

Adler's conceptual framework served me well in constructing my model on charisma. Whether you witness the magnetism of President Barack Obama, the magnanimity of Oprah Winfrey or the altruism of Bono, they are all moved by their compelling drives and motivation, which are all self-serving.

Adler cut through the chase in defining the human psyche that was de-mystifying in ways that eclipsed Sigmund Freud. Although contemporaries, Adler's contribution to psychology seems much more visceral and pragmatic than that of Freud.

I highly recommend "Understanding Human Nature" as a timeless tome more
relevant today than a century ago.

A good start

This is a great book -- one of the early attempts to understand human nature in the framework of scientific inquiry rather than philosophy, religion, or metaphysics. I read it in the first Fawcett edition (Fawcett Premier Book). This little paperback is in a small font that I find difficult. But I'm rating the ideas more than the format. The most significant contribution of the book is summarized in this quotation: "No one can lift himself above society, demonstrate his power over his fellows, without simultaneously arousing the opposition of others who want to prevent his success. ... Finally, we come rationally to a thesis which we have felt intuitively: the law of the equality of all human beings. This law may not be broken without immediately producing opposition and discord. it is one of the fundamental laws of human society."

The book was first published in 1927 -- this was the era of the Great Physicists. Adler seems to me much influenced by the classical physics of his day and preceding generations. His aim appears to me to be the establishment of "laws" in the relatively new science of sociology similar to those established by Newton and others for the hard sciences. He doesn't seem to be aware (as many still aren't a century later) that those "laws" had already been transcended by the contemporary physicists of his time.

Great writing style and story telling

I don't really understand what the negative reviews are for. I burned through this book in about three sittings. I played music for over a decade and spent some time on the road so the story was very interesting to me. I love Keith's anologies and philosophical insights; especially Ray's reunion with Evan. The writing style was excellent, especially for a first novel. I hope that Keith continues to write. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who loves ETIDs lyrics or anyone who enjoys a deeper read.

Interesting, philisophical read from Every Time I Die vocalist

Super interesting read, takes a bit to get into but if you put in the effort it pays off. Very philisophical with some fun humor thrown in, but sad at the same time as it takes an introspective dive into the depression of an individual and how he got there. And knowing about Keith and being a huge fan of Every Time I Die, it was cool to see how this shaped up.

Keith Buckley's "Scale"

This is the story of a man trying desperately hard to live a life so fast that his thoughts and feelings can't catch up with him. A man so concerned with his sense of self that he loses himself entirely. Ray Goldman is painfully self-conscious and wields an arrogance that springs from a genuine fear of inferiority and not mattering in some grand way. Everything he does is meant to both build himself up and destroy himself, and he does both in splendid fashion.

I enjoyed the journey this book took me on and the author's distinct style of writing. He clearly admires the beat writers (specifically Kerouac) but does not seek to emulate them, which I was thankful for because I couldn't stand "On The Road". Sentences tended to run on, and the metaphors could get quite complex, to the point that I found myself re-reading whole paragraphs because I just didn't get it. I loved the author's use of opposites and contradictions to highlight how the things we feel often go against what we think we should feel.

This is not the kind of book I am usually drawn to. Stories of existential crisis and nihilistic self-defeat don't usually interest me as I feel they are mostly told from a place of smug superiority. This story comes from a place of real struggle. The author's struggle to go through the teeth-gritting pain of being honest with himself and reconciling that self with the one he has put forth to his fans and loved ones. This struggle played out in a conversation between the main character and an old friend, but I read it as an internal argument that the author was having with himself.

I felt that I gained a better understanding of Every Time I Die (the author's band) through reading this book. I was constantly reminded of the song Wanderlust, specifically these lyrics: "When they unearth these passages, will I appear to be proud? Not if you're listening close enough. Not if you're sounding it out." Chapter 23 opens with a consideration of the letter/word "I": "My entire world was in that letter, all my sadness, all my jealousy, all my guilt, and all my strength." Is this a reference to the "I" that is often used as a symbol for ETID? Perhaps.
