Pretty good for her 33rd Regency novel

This is one of the author's later Regency romances (her next-to-last one, in fact) and while it's not nearly her best, it's not bad at all. It could also practically be titled "Regency Road Trip." Charity Steane (but who prefers to be called "Cherry") has the misfortune to be the daughter of a con man and wastrel who essentially abandoned her to a private school when she was small -- and neglected to pay the bills. Charity was eventually packed off to the country home of her aunt, who saw her as a source of free household labor and treated her abominably. Having taken all she can stand, Charity packs her old portmanteau and sets out on foot for London, to seek assistance from her grandfather, who had cut all ties with her father. However, though she's nineteen, Charity looks and acts much younger and has almost no experience at all of the world. Cut to young Viscount Desford who has been visiting his parents and is also on his way back to London. He sees Cherry trudging along the road and, being both a gentleman and a Good Person, picks her up for her own safety, promising to escort her where she's going. When Granddad (who wasn't expecting company) is discovered to have gone off to the country himself, Des is stuck with the bewildered and panicky girl, for whom he now considers himself responsible. What is he to do with her while he tries to locate the old man? He can't take her to his own home -- people would talk. So he conveys her quickly to the home, not far from his parents' place, of his very old friend, Henrietta Silverdale. Nearly ten years before, Des and Hetta had been the subjects of a parental conspiracy to get them married off, which they had successfully resisted, but they've remained very close and have frequently come to each other's rescue. So Hetta will look after young Charity while Des pursues his quest for her relief.

That's the set-up, somewhat reminiscent of a Hollywood-style romantic comedy, and it works very well. The supporting characters are equally well drawn and the action is more pall-mall than usual in Heyer's work, as Desford, playing the gallant knight errant, hares off to Harrowgate and Bath, interviewing reluctant servants and dealing with rebellion on the part of his own butler and groom, whose sense of the social niceties are more rigid than his own. The pattern you would expect, from experience in reading Heyer's books would be for Des and Charity to discover their feelings for each other in the last chapter, but -- well, I won't give the ending away. But it's an enjoyable weekend's read.

Witty and Satisfying

I'll admit it openly and unashamedly: I am a Georgette Heyer fangirl. Anyone who knows me, knows that I simply don't read romances or chick lit, so this admission is a rather earth shattering.

I have been a Heyer fan, since that day in the library when, ever searching for something to recommend to a precocious early teens reader, our local librarian Jill turned to the other librarian Mary and said, "How about Georgette Heyer?". Mary, the Heyer reader, decreed that was an excellent idea, and lead me through the stacks to the H's, showed me the row of Heyer's novels and recommended one. It was love at first read. Since, I've tried other "Regency" authors, but my addiction is to Ms. Heyer, not to the genre of Regency Romance.

Ms. Heyer was excruciatingly historically accurate (to the annoyance of her critics) and filled her books with as much of the language and flavor of Regency England as she possibly could (another sore spot with critics). For a teenager with Asperger's, a predilection toward British history and a love of words, Ms. Heyer's Regency novels, full of such detailed depictions of high society life during this time, were gifts from heaven. I still read them anytime I want a lighter read, to escape completely and totally into another time.

Charity Girl has long been one of my favorites, since that first reading when I found myself surprised (due to slowness to pick up on social cues, even in books) with the ending couples. In this delightful novel, the Viscount Desford (quite the eligible bachelor), meets young (beneath her years) Charity Steane in the role of poor relation in her aunt's house. The next day, he literally runs across her as he is returning to London; she has run away from her unkind (though not cruel, but certainly not loving) aunt and is attempting to walk to London.

Desford knows that she is unsuspecting prey for any blackguard that drives by and does what any decent gentleman would do: he reluctantly becomes involved. His attempts to help Charity find a safe place send him from one shire to the next watering hole, looking for her grandfather. In the meantime, he has placed Charity in the charge of his best friend, Hetta, much to Hetta's chagrin. They've been friends since nursery days, though, and Hetta is persuaded to help him out this scrape, though she worries about the outcome.

Charity Girl is witty and intelligent, with a satisfying romantic conclusion. Her characters are lively and their dialogue is a joy to read. For light reading (though meatier than most light reading), one can't go wrong with this one.

Viscount Ashley Desford meets Charity(aka Cherry) Steane at a gathering while visiting his aunt. The next day as he returns to his London home, he encounters her walking on a lonely road and seeing the peril that she could fall into, takes her to his best friend Henrietta(Hetta) Silverdale's house. So begins a comedy of errors and misunderstandings as Desford tries to find Cherry's grandfather and avoid scandal.

All the main characters were very likable and even the baddies give the reader a chuckle. One of the biggest problems with this book is that I believe that the novel may have benefited from being shorter because there were parts of it that I was not bored with but certainly not interested in. A prime example of this is when Desford sets off to find Cherry's grandfather. The long descriptions of the journey there and back were somewhat tedious and I was impatient to hear more about the main characters not about road travels, broken wheels and horses going lame. Another part of the story that was not as well handled was the romance between the two lovers(sorry I will not tell who these are, you will have to find that out yourself). Not enough time was spent developing that story line and the reader is left to fill in their back story. By the time they get together, you are happy for them but its hard to feel very invested because you are not given the opportunity.

It wasn't all that I thought it was going to be but it was not bad at all. Something tells me that this book is not Georgette Heyer at her best. All in all an entertaining read.

CUTTING EDGES - sadly only literally

The Gestalten's new book on collage, Cutting Edges, aims to collect the best of contemporary collage work. What started as research for a show has ended up in a over 200 pages document stuffed to the max with images from a large group of artists.

One wonders, then, why it looks like the work of only a handful of artists. The extremely homogenous look of the included work leads one to think that the selection follows a very limited set of preferences, and/or that it is even commissioned. The fact that a lot of the work is from 2010 suggests it.

Illustration is a more fitting term for this work, as style and trend are more apparent than methodology and, behold - content. Yes, nostalgia is a contemporary concern, but when even the digital collages are saturated with 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s thoughtless nostalgia, it is hardly an expression of our time. There is also an annoyingly large number of work resembling classic collage artists from the past, with no mention why or if that is the intention.

Therefore, sadly, the book's title must be understood only literally. The fetish of yellowed paper, torn edges, black and white images juxtaposed with bright colors, small, absurdist jokes, fancy geometrics and slightly risqué images belittles collage to mere formal exercises for the contemporary designer - and nothing resembling the metaphysical awareness of collage as an actual way to open new doors of visual language, to communicate, to capture something of this time with current means.

Out of the several books on collage that has come out the last few years, this one is remarkably unoriginal. I suggest getting the ones from Thames & Hudson, Black Dog Publishing, or Merrel / New Museum, all named Collage something-or-other, then get the books on the individual artists. Because I have yet to find THE essential book on collage. Maybe Phaidon should step up to the plate and release Vitamin C for collage?

Very thought-provoking and surrealistic study of contemporary collage. I have been very interested in collage for several years, and this book contained artists with whom I was not familiar. They were wonderful! I have trouble finding books with new & different ideas in collage, this one delighted.

Interesting and relevant

All over a very nice book! + for a great cover and fine paper aswell. Chosing that specific artwork as a book cover is a huge teezer (one of the most interesting in the book in my opinion) - but this book does not follow a specific "style" as you may think from its' wrapping; the book is focusing on contemporary collage and paperworks (professionals) in its' wide sense. An exciting publication that I'm going to look into over and over again.

This gave me a deeper overstanding of Rastafari and the Rasta women's role. I also enjoyed making the recipes in the book especially the Jamaican Curried Tofu. Thank you for making such a wonderful book that was easy to overstand. Peace and Blessings

It's amazing how after reading this book so much of it was apart of my life already. I have been doing a lot of these things since I was younger. Great read for any woman wanting to become more of what she already is in life.

Wow this was a great book

I WON THIS BOOK IN A CONTEST!!!

Mariss and Holten, how will she tell him what she has done, will he forgive her? Sebastian is always there, always pushing her. When tragedy strikes, Sebastian is always there to pick up the pieces, but somethings he just doesn't handle well. His feelings kept tucked neatly away though everyone can see how in love he is, but will he finally tell her? I can say this book was one I couldn't put down, I read it in one day, it was that good!!! The author puts so much into it, so much emotion, so many lives changed. I was cheering for these two the entire time!! I am so glad the first book was free over the weekend, on a whim I took a chance, never having read this author before. I am so glad I did!!! This was intriguing with everything going on, how their friendship and love for each other comes out on top when things go so wrong. Read the first book Man Without Rules then read this one. You will not be disappointed!!!!!!

I will definitely be reading more from this author!!!

This has to be one of the best adult contemporary erotic romances I have ever had the pleasure of reading.

I have to admit that I haven’t read the first book in this series, and I probably should have, because at the beginning of this book I felt like the odd man out. As the characters partied it up, as Marris and Sebastian shared knowing smiles and looks, I knew there was so much more to this story and it obviously all went down in the first book; but, having said that, it took nothing away from this book. In fact, it actually added a sense of mystery to the story and I cannot wait to read A Man Without Rules.

I really got sucked into this story when a devastating turn of events shattered Marris’ life, and the emotions just flowed from the pages from that point on, as she tried to put herself back together with the help of some amazing friends.

Mariss’ relationship with Sebastian was complicated. There was an obvious attraction and plenty of chemistry, but Bassy’s way of life meant he wouldn’t become emotionally involved, therefore Marris was forced to do the same. I really loved how mature their friendship and relationship was. They knew what was expected of them and what they each expected, and even though deep down there was a longing for more, they never allowed their feelings to mess with things. There were times that both of them showed their jealous streak, but that only intensified the sexual tension between them. I really fell in love with them as individuals and as a couple. They were fun and witty people that I could get along with in real life. I loved their sarcasm, I understood their moodiness, and my heart ached for both of them when life seemed to drown them in misery.

This book was emotionally charged with tons of humor, great sex scenes, even better friendships, and the ultimate test of how love can change people for the better. With a solid plotline, clean and crisp writing that held my attention throughout, and exciting characters, I can only describe it as flawless.

I like my stories with some smut and a story and this delivered both but the multiple people the same day and the cheating just wasn't my bag.

TRUSTING YOUR CARES AWAY

This is a wonderful Victorian age-play story with a touch of mystery and suspense. Henrietta Waters prefers to be called Etta, her father’s pet name for her. She never really had a childhood, her mother died when she was young, her father became ill when she was fifteen and she cared for him until he died when she was twenty. She is relinquished into the care of his estranged Uncle who didn’t want to deal with her and sends her off to Ashby Chateau finishing school. Philip Hartley is the owner and Headmaster of Ashby and takes Etta into his custody that same night from her Uncle Jack. From there, her life changes, no more burdens or cares, she is to regress and be young and carefree. What happens when she is basically kidnapped in the middle of the day from an evil man who is cruel? Can Etta escape a fate that may lead to her death? There is a big difference in correction spankings and cruel punishment beatings. Both can be found in this story, along with age-play, medical play, anal play, and explicit sex scenes.

Wonderful Victorian Age Play!

I'll be honest. I don't usually read historicals. I also don't read very much AP.

But between the fantastic reviews, and the fact that I have enjoyed Alta Hensley's books before, I decided to try it out.

I am so glad I did.

I loved it!

Etta was such a wonderful, caring, amazing young woman, who had such a rough time with life.

The chance to go to Ashby Chateau seemed at first like a punishment from her uncle, but it turned out to be such a blessing.

I loved how both authors portrayed the love, contentment and safety Etta felt with her daddy. There were F/f spankings and one small sexual scene, but it was done very well.

I loved the whole story, and adored Etta.

This was such a wonderful story. I'm glad I took the chance and read outside my comfort zone.

Perfect Victorian Age Play

Etta was the perfect character to fall in love with. Her life was a little rough going with the task of caring for her ailing father but with his passing came her greatest opportunity. She was to be married as quickly as possible according to her Uncle. but luckily was enrolled at Ashby finishing school. Phillip has his hands full running the Ashby. Though he is adamant he is not looking for a wife he easily falls for the loveable little Etta.

I love that Etta just fits right in with the school and Phillip. Lots of love, spankings and a little suspense bring it all home. You will fall in love with the couple and root for their happy little ending.
