About the Author

Peter J. Blau, PhD, is currently the co-editor-in-chief of Wear journal and a consultant in tribology. He earned BS and MS degrees in metallurgy and materials science from Lehigh University (Bethlehem, Pennsylvania) and a PhD in metallurgical engineering from The Ohio State University (Columbus). His professional career began as a coinvestigator under NASA’s lunar sample examination program. Since then, he has spent nearly 40 years in basic and applied research and has held positions at the U.S. Air Force Materials Laboratory, the National Institute for Standards and Technology, the U.S. Office of Naval Research, and Oak Ridge National Laboratory. A long-standing contributor to the International Conferences on Wear of Materials, he is a past conference chair and editor of several proceedings volumes. In 2011, the Wear of Materials Steering Committee established the Peter J. Blau Best Poster Award to be presented at each conference. Dr. Blau’s work has earned his election as a fellow of three societies: ASM International, ASTM International, and the STLE. He also coholds several patents and R&D 100 Awards. In addition to this book, Dr. Blau has authored or coauthored books on microindentation hardness, friction, and wear. In the early 1990s, he worked with ASM International to develop the first ASM Metals Handbook volume devoted to friction, wear, and lubrication. Since 1979, he has participated in ASTM Committee G02 on Wear and Erosion, serving two terms as its chairman and also as chairman of Subcommittee G02.91 on Terminology. In addition, he has led and participated in the development of four standard test methods. Dr. Blau served as leader of the Tribology Research User Center at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and as a principal investigator for more than 26 years. Since leaving Oak Ridge National Laboratory in 2013, he has been active in technical editing, writing, and consulting.

I liked it! Nice short that delivers

I've always been a fan of Gennita Low's military hero books. The only bad things about this novella was the fact its too short and the cheesy title. The story is a fast read that covers a rescue, so you are starting in the middle of a relationship, so there's no real character development, what you have is a snapshot of a story line, and I think its very well done. If you haven't had a chance to pick up one of Gennita Low's full length novels, go for it- I've never read anything bad from this author, This is just a snippet if her writing style.

—A Novel of the Great Siege of Malta, follows the adventures of a young Spanish soldier-of-fortune Francisco de Barai over the course of fifteen of the most turbulent years in the most turbulent century in history, adventures that climax in the Great Siege of Malta of 1565.
During that most momentous of all sieges, tens of thousands of Turks descend on the island, defended by some 600 Knights of Malta and another few thousand mercenaries and Maltese civilians. The horrific and heroic events are recounted with the utmost attention to historical accuracy, just as the entire escalating chain of events is played out against a finely researched tapestry of Renaissance values, superstitions and culture.
Tony Rothman is a physicist and writer. He received a B.A. in physics from Swarthmore College in 1975, and a Ph.D. from the Center for Relativity at the University of Texas, Austin in 1981. After leaving Texas, he did post-doctoral work at Oxford, Moscow and Cape Town. Rothman’s scientific research has been in cosmology, the study of the early universe, and he has authored approximately sixty scientific papers on that subject. He has taught physics at Princeton, Harvard and elsewhere.
Apart from his scientific work, Rothman is the author of eleven books, both fiction and nonfiction. The most recent is Firebird, a scientific suspense novel concerning a race for nuclear fusion (Wildside Press, 2015). He has also authored seven plays, contributes to a number of national magazines, including Scientific American and Discover, and has been nominated for the Pulitzer Prize.

A fine adventure in the Ottoman Empire

The Ottoman Turkish Empire rose in about 1300 and conquered the entire Middle East, sacking the greatest city in the world at that time. The capture of Constantinople in 1453 marked the end of the Roman Empire.
In 1565 Ottoman Empire was threatening all of Europe. One thorn in the side of the aggressive expansionism of the Ottoman Empire was the Christian Island of Malta. Malta was the headquarters of the last crusaders; the Knights Hospitaller, also known as the Order of St. John of Jerusalem. The Knights of St. John had proven to be the most tenacious enemies of the Turkish Empire. They were the last knights to leave the Holy Land. From the Island of Rhodes, they had raided the Empire’s shipping, setting many Christian captives free from Ottoman slavery.
Tony Rothman’s vivid and exciting novel follows the story of Francisco de Barai, a young Spaniard, as he travels with the Knights. Rothman weaves an exciting story and infuses the tale with knowledge of 16th century military and everyday life. This is the first novel, of three, about the Great Siege of Malta.

Starting about 2005, there were a sudden flurry of novels centered on the 1565 siege of Malta. Tony Rothman's 2015 offering marks the latest of the bunch, and if you're coming late to the party, his is one you will want to go to. He has gone deeper into the subject matter than have others and has put the findings all to good use. The characters work, the narrative flows, the drama is compelling.

If I have any complaint at all, it is that we are dealing with a trilogy rather than a single volume. I don't mind a long read so long as the story is moving along. A personal quirk, which takes nothing away from the work.
