About the Author
Norma Broude and Mary D. Garrard are professors of art history at the American University in Washington, D.C., and are leading scholars in the field of feminist art history. Broude is the author of The Macchiaioli: Italian Painters of the Nineteenth Century (1987), Impressionism, A Feminist Reading: The Gendering of Art, Science, and Nature in the Nineteenth Century (1991), and Georges Seurat (1992). Garrard has written articles and reviews on feminism and art history, Jacopo Sansovino, Michelangelo and Raphael, and Renaissance sculpture. She is the author of Artemisia Gentileschi: The Image of the Female Hero in Italian Baroque Art (1989) and, with Broude, the coeditor of Feminism and Art History: Questioning the Litany (1982).

The essential overview of feminist art history

This is essential reading for anyone interested in feminist art history. It was one of the earlier scholarly compliations of critical articles concerning issues in visual representation of women as subject and by women as artists. Ranging from a study of images of women in Greek art, to an analysis of the psycho-social motivations of 20th century Expressionism, to an investigation of American quilting and its influence on contemporary art, each essay contributes to our understanding of paradigms which are basic in forming a new context-- a context which is needed to re-examine the white, Western male canon of standard art histories. The essays also provide a fundamental vocabulary for investigation of specific works, and aptly balance the feminist positions about art with vital, challenging interpretations of cultural conditions and biases which have affected our perception of gender and the place of art in societies over time. The introduction by the editors defines the content, nuance and strategy of the feminist art historical project and is as pertinent today as it was twenty years ago. I would recommend this book as a useful starting point for research and education; and for students, teachers or anyone willing to cast off the blinders of assumed histories.

About the Author
Allen Rubin has been doing and teaching research since 1976, when he received his Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh. Renowned in social work, Dr. Rubin has written several research texts, published numerous research studies on social work practice, and is a past president of the Society for Social Work and Research.

Muddled prose, can lead students into statistical errors

I wanted to like this book. The title is great for the course I will be teaching. I quickly found problems, but felt 'well, I can teach around that point.' After working through 100 or so pages I began to ask myself: "If I have to struggle at understanding what the author should be saying, how will students possibly understand?" There are many examples, but I will give one for stat teachers who might read this. EVERYONE who teaches stat knows that we do not prove the null hypothesis; we merely reject it or let it stand. Rubin instead goes through a discussion (see p. 102) about why we would not "confirm the null hypothesis." The discussion centers on the idea that the probability found might be 0.15 or 0.20 ---- that suggests, he says, that we cannot be sure that the null is true. He thus tempts the student to think, "well, if I calculate a t or r and find the probability to be 0.80, maybe then I have shown the null to be true." What EVERYONE, author, teacher, and student, should say is that with small sample sizes, we will often not reject really false null hypotheses. Instead, all we need to do, as implied by Rubin, is test a small sample discover that a very large probability, and presto, we have confirmed the null hypothesis. (SPSS results will provide such large probabilities even though they are not available in t, F, etc. tables in stat books.)
Regretfully, I am still looking for a text for the Spring class.

Reads terrible

I am almost through my statistics class and if it wasn't for the tutor, teacher, and fellow classmates I would have struggled with just reading this book. It jumps all over the place and over examples things. ARG! is how I felt every time I read it.

Overall, a good textbook for statistics in social work practice

This is a good basic text to learn statistics for social work research. I am giving it 3 stars because there are some areas where I found the authors to go into great length to explain things that are more confusing than helpful. These areas that I found confusing were not covered in my graduate school stats class, and I therefore found it unnecessarily complicating the already daunting subject. Overall, the authors are great teachers in their clarity of writing style, presentation of information, and ability to explain complex matters to a wide audience.

In my book: "Trauma and Transformation: A 12-Step Guide", I fully explore the spiritual side-effects of trauma, and how the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous is a powerful systematic approach for the trauma survivor seeking a spiritual solution.

An extremely practical guide to active filter synthesis

I strongly recommend this book. I first saw this book in abouit 1980 - it is still the very best and most practical book I have ever met for synthesis of the tradtional range of active filters. Contains excellent advice on practical techniques. Covers high, low, band pass plus other designs. Anyone with a basic understanding of electronics can design a working filter of their choice in minutes.

Rapid & Practical. A most useful book!

Over the 35 years since this book was written, digital filter techniques gradually supplanted the role of active filters in many products, yet there often remains a need for well applied analog filters in modern electronic systems.
This book pretty much assumes that you have familiarity with operational amplifiers and if you desire in-depth discussion of filter theory with all of the mathematical foundations that you will seek other references; however, if you are fairly handy with op-amps and have at least a basic understanding of what filters are for, then this book really delivers on the promise of its title.

Though clearly aimed at engineers with analog circuit background, those with basic electronic circuit skills will find tables and design guides which will enable them to produce workable designs of a wide range of commonly used filters with a minimum of computation. On the other hand, transfer functions and circuit formulas beyond pure "cook books" are also provided which allow greater flexibility to computationally adept designers who wish to customize further.

Nowadays, a digital designer desiring a simple anti-aliasing filter may find an on-line "expert system" which will design a common filter even more rapidly than this 1980's approach which was suitable for a hand calculator, but he probably will not find the range of topologies, filter types and formulas that this book provides and which allow a designer to further optimize or modify a design. This very straightforward tool helped me earn a living over many years and to the authors, Johnson & Hilburn, I offer my sincerest thanks.
