Powerful manifesto against the prison industrial complex

Edward Bunker's "The Animal Factory" is not just a great novel about prison life, but a powerful critique of America's penal system. While the book is over 20 years old, it is more timely than ever, with the United States now holding more people in prison than any other country on the planet, both in terms of percentage of population and total numbers.
"Factory" chronicles how an intelligent, thoughtful, non-violent drug offender becomes a cold-blooded killer in little over a year. The San Quentin of Bunker's novel is an arena where anyone can die at any time, many times just hours before being released/paroled. It is a world where any slight to your character must be responded to with force (and oftentimes murder), or you are seen as weak and instant prey for prison rapists. Bunker's novel demonstrates that U.S. prisons are "factories" for super-predators, turning out far more dangerous criminals than those who enter.
While many of the book's arguments are not neccessarily original or ground-breaking, "Factory" condenses these themes brilliantly in a lean and intensely written narrative that grabs you by the throat and doesn't let go.
"Factory" should be required reading by just about everyone, but especially those people who believe that the solution to crime is to pass more laws and build more prisons.
Also highly recommended: "You Are Going to Prison" by Jim Hogshire; "The Hot House" by Pete Earley.

A prison classic.

An extremely realistic book about the life in San Quentin prison written by an ex prisoner who transfers his first hand experiences to the reader. Characters,prison environment and incidents are very well crafted and shaped. This book is strong enough to put the fear of God into even literally the most hardened reader.You will not even think of emptying your car's ashtray to the streets after reading this.

The circus has not left town!

The prisons portrayed in the media are usually the worst of the worst, like California's San Quentin. But the truth of what happens in these hell-holes is often distorted by Hollywood and popular culture. However, one book, "The Animal Factory" is spot on, probably because the author, Edward Bunker, spent eighteen years in and out of California's prison system.

Ron is a first-time offender, who, if he keeps a clean record, will only have to serve two years in San Quentin. If he doesn't stay out of trouble, he'll have to serve ten to life. But his young age and good looks make him an instant target for the mindless predators who inhabit this hell-on-earth.

Earl is a hard-core convict "so ravaged by moral confusion that he believed in nothing except personal loyalty." Earl comes to Ron's rescue because Earl needs a good friend more than anything else after deciding that he's getting too old to continue his destructive lifestyle.

The mentor teaches the protoge how to walk the tightrope of navigating between the convict rules and the prison authority rules, the two of which are at complete odds with each other. Violating the convict code can result in death and running afoul of the authorities can result in more time, which, in a place like San Quentin, is in itself a long, slow death.

San Quentin doesn't sound much different from the federal USP (United States Penitentiary) in Pollock, LA where I served five years. As Bunker says, a prison like this "...is a factory that turns out human animals. The chances are that whatever you get out of prison will be worse than what you send in..trying to make a decent human being out of someone by sending them to prison is like trying to make a Muslim by putting someone in a Trappist monastery."

Most prisons in this country are probably more similar to the one I'm in now, Marianna, a medium security federal prison. Most of the inmates are not so much a threat to society as they just can't seem to function in society. Marianna is more like a second-rate mental institution than a prison.

So for a more accurate portrayal of what day to day life is like in America's violent prisons, read The Animal Factory. It was written in 1977, and a movie version starring Willem Defoe and Edward Furlong was produced in 2000. I haven't seen the movie version, so I don't know if it's been Hollywood-ized or not.

Today also marks my eleventh year in prison. And I'm really tired. I'm tired of the daily struggle to not become an animal myself. The scary thing is that I can't be sure until I'm released back into a world I haven't seen since Bill Clinton was president, a world before iPhones and Facebook, a world before 9/11.

Right now, I live in a dimension where morals and values and ethics are grossly distorted. My companions for the last eleven years have been fellow bank robbers, drug dealers and murderers.

What effect is that having on me? But if it's true that what doesn't kill you only makes you stronger, then I should be fine.

Too Far out...

Short Sci-Fi, R+ rated, short story. Too far out for me. I never read the last chapters. Maybe I was disappointed that it wasn't a current day version of 1984 by Orwell. Although some might think it is? In my opinion there are much better ways to spend your time and money.

Peter Levenda is a well-known author of several books including Unholy Alliance and Ratline. as I just recently wrote on Amazon.de (I bought this book in Germany because I live there) this has to be one of the most bone-chilling books I've ever read;

it would be of help to first read Levenda's "Ratline" (let alone his "Unholy Alliance") in order to completely comprehend the immense scope of this book but it's not a requirement; this book stands on its own;

and Levenda's research dove-tails perfectly with the research/books of Dr. Joseph Farrell; as Levenda once stated about Farrell: "we both toil in the same vineyards"-

if one is interested in this subject this is an absolute 'must'-

extremely highly recommended on my part-

The fear of Communism in the aftermath of WW2 often led to the same irony : brutal suppression of human rights and sinister Government takeovers. Mr. Levenda's study is well written and ..well sourced leaving with the
idea that there is much more to be revealed about this sordid chapter in History...highly recommended.

Editor Tucker is also the editor of encyclopedias on the two world wars and the cold war, among other works. The 750 alphabetically arranged and signed entries are accurate and balanced. They cover individuals, events, groups and organizations, places, ideas, movements, technologies, objects, artifacts, treaties, and other topics. Examples are the Al-Aqsa Mosque massacre, Al Jazeera news agency, Mohammad Naguib (first president of Egypt), and the 2007 siege of the Nahr al Bared refugee camp in Lebanon. Although the focus is on the Arab-Israeli wars from 1947, many entries, such the one for the Ottoman Empire, help achieve a balance between historical and contemporary context. The work is strengthened by references at the end of each entry, see also and cross-references, birth and death dates in biographical entries, line-drawn maps, and black-and-white photos. Accurate categorical and general indexes are repeated in each volume. Following the A–Z entries, volume 3 contains several appendixes: “Army Ranks,” “Navy Ranks,” and brief statistical profiles for several countries, current to 1999. Spencer C. Tucker, PhD, is Senior Fellow of Military History at ABC-CLIO. Dr. Tucker has written or edited 36 books, including ABC-CLIO's award-winning The Encyclopedia of the Cold War, as well as the comprehensive A Global Chronology of Conflict.

Priscilla Mary Roberts, PhD, is an associate professor of history and Honorary Director of the Centre of American Studies at the University of Hong Kong. She spent 2003 as a visiting Fulbright scholar at the Institute for European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies at The George Washington University, Washington, D.C. She was the documents volume editor of ABC-CLIO's The Encyclopedia of the Cold War and the award-winning The Encyclopedia of World War I.

Extremely Biased and Prejudiced thru Selective Entries

It is obvious thru the topics omitted that this encyclopedia is extremely biased and prejudiced; it is indeed scandalous. To give a few examples:

- Massacres like those of Deir Yassin have an entry, but massacres by terrorists against Israeli and Jewish children like those of Kiryat Shmona, Ma'alot, in the seventies, do not get an entry

- Massacres against Jews from Arab countries are totally omitted. For example, the two Cairo massacres that took places in the Jewish quarter in Cairo in 1948, and where several dozen Jews were killed, and nearly a hundred were injured, are not mentioned. Nor is a third massacre where six Jews were killed in downtown Cairo is mentioned.

- The rape of Jewish women trying to escape Syria thru Lebanon in the seventies goes unmentioned.

- Also unmentioned is the mass arrest of Egyptian Jewish males between the ages of 17 and 60 from 1967 thru 1970. Their incarceration and torture in the detention camps of Abu Za'abal and Tura for up to three years was an act of revenge for Egypt's defeat in the war against the Jews of Egypt. Many of these Jews were paraded as Israeli POW's in Ramses Square where they were abused by mobs.

- The incarceration of Egyptian Jews in 1956, as well as their mass deportation out of the country, is never mentioned

- Authors like Mahmoud Darweesh have an entry in the encyclopedia, but Israeli authors like Shmuel Yossef Agnon do not have an entry. Also absent from the entries is Eliezer Ben Yehuda, the man responsible for the revival of the Hebrew Language. This is the only case in history where a language long unused was revived.

- Also unmentioned are Jewish authors from Arab countries like Albert Memi (author of Jews and Arabs).
