Frederick the Great and the Seven Years' War, 1756-1763, by Herbert J. Redman

The Seven Years' War (1756-1763), known as the French and Indian War in North America, was perhaps the first war that might be called a world war. It involved the major European countries, North and Central America, the coast of West Africa, the Philippines, and India. A major player in the war was Frederick the Great (1712-1786), the king of Prussia and a great military leader. The first major work on the monarch and his role in the war for more than a century, this book sheds light on many aspects of military and European history.

Prussia's Greatest War
By Lord Clare
Redman's work is an all encompassing account of the Prussian Army's operations in Central Europe during the Seven Years War. In simple terms he covers everything, not solely the campaigns of Frederick during this time, but as well the many actions fought without him. This is especially nice because most works on the subject tend to focus only on the doings of Frederick, though a brilliant general he could not be everywhere at once, and because of this a large chunk of the war is oft times ignored or glossed over as not important - i.e. the Russian invasion of East Prussia in 1757 culminating in their bloody victory at Gross Jagersdorf. Such actions as these are rarely given the treatment they deserve, despite the fact that events on the perimeter had strategic consequences as great as any on the main fronts.
Redman has a lot of history to deal with, seven years of near continuous conflict to be exact, with armies marching hither and thither, hurtling across the landscape so as to gain better position over their foes, before coming together in great and bloody confrontations that left thousands dead and many more maimed, as ugly a conflict as ever their was, with Prussia fighting for its very survival against an alliance of Europe's mightiest powers - Austria, Russia, France, Sweden, and the many lesser powers that accompanied them - with these facts in mind one cannot help but ask how did Frederick's kingdom survive? The answer to that is twofold: luck, and, more importantly, their army. The sheer durability of Prussia's army is awe inspiring to behold, for they are forced to fight a war on multiple fronts at once, against several different armies, and even though they are sometimes hammered into oblivion - Maxen, Kay, and Torgau to name but a few - they mange to recover in an astonishingly short amount of time, this was most certainly the case in the days immediately after Kunersdorf where Frederick losses eighteen thousand men in what was arguably his greatest tactical blunder, and yet in the space of a month he'd another army in the field.
Ultimately the allies fold first, Prussia retained her Silesian conquests, her army emerging from the slaughter battered and bloodied, but widely considered to be the greatest army in Europe, indeed in the subsequent decades many would openly copy Prussian methods, and in some cases better them.
Now Redman's book is not without problems. His writing for one felt stunted, lacking the narrative flourish of Duffy for one. Second, he can sometimes get lost in the details, and hence his battle narrative can be at times confusing, which brings me to another point in that this is not a book for beginners. Nor would I say that this is the definitive account on the matter, but rather is a nice complement to the scholarship that is already out there. Nevertheless, it is a noble effort, packed to the brim with details, but really no new insights. It is good but not great. For those looking to further there education in this manner I would point you to the works of the leading scholar in this area of study, Dr. Christoper Duffy.

Fredericks' Greatest Campaigns
By A. A. Nofi
A summary of the review on StrategyPage.Com

'Independent historian Redman gives us a comprehensive operational treatment of the Prussian role in the Seven Years’ War. With only the briefest introduction to set the political stage, Redman plunges into the war, which changed a middling power Prussia into an arbiter of European politics. There are fights, marches, sieges, plots, and more, all told in considerable detail, usually with some thoughtful analysis as well. Naturally Frederick’s actions dominate the text, but many other now largely forgotten actors – Seydlitz, Daun, Laudon, de Castries, Lacy, etc. – populate Redman’s account as well. The great flaw of this work is that Redman fails to give the reader an introduction to the military institutions and practice of the times, which thus makes the book more valuable for those already familiar with the background of the war.'
